OAKLAND (KPIX 5) — For the first time, BART has opened the door to tracking the location of their passengers, so they know where to find their trains in the event of an emergency.
Right now it’s only a couple hundred stations, but that will expand to all BART stations by 2020.
If there’s a problem on a track or in the train, the system will use location-based technology to send an alert to BART passengers about the potential trouble.
KPIX 5 first reported the new system in July, and it’s one of many transit improvements BART is implementing to make their system more reliable and more efficient.
These are the five biggest:
1. Real-Time Ride Stats
BART will track how many riders get on and off each train, and where they go after leaving the train. The data will be used to improve maintenance and training.
2. Automatic Train Supervision (ATS)
BART will be able to run trains with fewer operators, and train engineers will spend more time fixing the tracks and less time watching the displays.
The system allows trains to automatically run with fewer operators and less supervision.
3. Trains and Tracks
BART will be able to know the condition of the tracks and equipment — and even speed — right before trains arrive at a station. They can then adjust their schedule, or even disable a track to avoid a problem.
4. Enhanced Service Information
BART will show what track is used by a train, where it’s headed and how long it will take. It will even tell a rider what station they’re at.
5. BART Alerts
BART will send text and voice alerts on their website to passengers of emergency ac619d1d87
